About Us and our life in Rockingham/Mandurah
Hi my name is Eve and along with John my husband and our three youngest children we emigrated from Yorkshire in October 1998 to Perth in Western Australia. We were fortunate enough to have friends here in Rockingham. They collected us from the airport and kindly let us stay with them for a few days until we got our bearings, hired a car and found a house to rent in Mandurah. Despite this help it was a very big culture shock coming to Australia and since then we have often offered the hand of friendship to new migrants. It has become obvious to us that although everyone is different, most people face the same problems, frustrations and trepidation when they take the big plunge into their new life. The problems are the same when you emigrate from anywhere in the world.
We had considered a site like this while we were still in the UK and were desperate for information and communication with people who were about to embark on the same adventure. We wrote to several people via the Outwardbound News and continued those friendships when we arrived here. We, like you are doing now, madly searched the Net for information on housing, car hire, short term rental accommodation, schools and everything which was going to be important on our arrival.
Finally after living here and setting up our automotive business in the southern suburbs of Perth we have decided to construct what we hope will be an interesting, informative and useful site for all you Poms out there who are desperate to find out as much as you can before you arrive. Why the South of Perth?
We found the Southern suburbs suited us because they are close to very clean beaches, seem quieter than suburbs we visited in the north and have lots of new land at much better prices and with the freeway access, improved in recent years, and the train on its way access to the City of Perth is improving greatly. We rarely go to Perth ourselves since in both Rockingham and Mandurah there are a multitude of shops, schools, services and amenities so why bother? Mandurah is the fastest growing area in Australia with good job prospects due to this. Fremantle is close for a good night out or a meal on the famous "strip". We think it is the perfect place to live unless you want the big city life.
