Migrating to Perth in Western Australia is a big move and to help answer the question "what is it like" we are posting photos of the area we live in. From Rockingham south to Mandurah.
The photograph you are looking at has been taken from the East of Mandurah the road in the forefront of the picture is Pinjarra Road this road leads East to the farming town of Pinjarra which is about 25km from Mandurah and until Mandurah became the fastest growing City in Australia was the main town in the Peel Region. Going out towards Pinjarra there are still plenty of 5 acre blocks for sale with or without houses. The suburbs of North and South Yunderup, Ravenswood, Barrangup and Furnisdale are along Pinjarra road but within easy driving distance of Mandurah.
Pinjarra Road cuts West through the City of Mandurah to the old traffic bridge which crosses the mouth of the Estuary. To the right of Pinjarra Road you can see the suburbs of Riverside Gardens and Greenfields the buildings in the area with the white roof are the local primary school. Just to the North (right of the picture) and out of the picture is the local Peel Hospital and health campus. Both of these suburbs are in the lower price bracket for housing with houses starting at about $350,000. Riverside Gardens as the name suggests runs along side the river in parts. The suburb known as Country Roads is also just down the road which leads past the primary school. Properties in Country Roads are on half acre blocks and are in the mid $600,000 as a general price range.
To the left of Pinjarra Road in the foreground is the suburb of Coodanup you can see the buildings housing the local High School in this area. If you follow the road going South (left) the buildings are clearly seen with a large playing field behind. There is also a private school (Mandurah Catholic College) and a primary school in the area. The houses close to the estuary in this area are often older houses on large blocks of land which were used as holiday shacks. Now as you can see there are lots of new homes being built in the area.
Housing in the old Coodanup is now around $450,000 because of its proximity to the water. There is a new land area with large blocks being released too. In the new Coodanup area housing is still around $300-400,000.
If you follow Pinjarra Road up to the large junction you can clearly see the large shopping complex at this junction this houses a large number of stores and take away food outlets, including, kmart, BigW, Woolworths and Coles - as well as many small stores such as hairdressers, chemists, jewellers, shoe shops, newsagents, cafes, clothes shops etc. Behind the centre which is known as Centro Shopping Centre you can see the local footy park and soccer ground home to Peel Thunder. In the same area there are netball courts, indoor sports complex, tennis courts and a local youth club. Sports and sporting clubs play a big role in Western Australia.
The area to the left of Pinjarra Road and opposite the shopping complex is known as Dudley Park and extends from the area right down to the centre of Mandurah and along the foreshore. Opposite the Centro shopping centre there is the police station, library and just a little further down the road the local swimming pool. Dudley Park primary school is located in this area. To the right of Pinjarra Road and down to the foreshore area is the area known as Mandurah and Silver Sands area. The buildings along Pinjarra Road with the white roofs are mainly shops and car yards. you can buy almost anything if you follow Pinjarra Road down into old Mandurah foreshore. Once on the foreshore there are a multitude of shops, cafes and lovely parks as you will see if you look on our photo pages. The local cinema complex and Arts Centre is also in the foreshore area.
Once Pinjarra Road meets the old traffic bridge it crosses the river and enters Halls Head. The old bridge is a favourite fishing spot for young and old and there is a boardwalk under the bridge to fish off. You can zoom in and see the new marina complex nestled in the estuary to the right of the picture. This is a recent development for Mandurah and houses the local yacht and fishing club there are hundreds of boats moored on the marina and there is a variety of shops and restaurants actually on the marina itself. There are apartments available on the marina ranging from $800,000 to well over $2 million. Opposite the marina in Halls Head there are many canal homes again in the region of $1million upwards.
Follow the road right at the junction of Pinjarra Road you are on Fremantle road (go left and its known as Mandurah road). You would then be on the main road through Mandurah past Greenfields and on to Meadow Springs, Watersun and San Remo all suburbs within 5 minutes of the Centro Shopping Centre. Prices ranging from $400,000 upwards depending on proximity to the sea. This road takes you to Rockingham (approx 25km) and then onto either the freeway to Perth or to Fremantle as the name suggests. None of the areas are visible on this photo apart from Greenfields as previously mentioned.
Follow the road left at the junction this is known as Mandurah Road going South this is the main road (until the new freeway South) carrying traffic from Perth to the towns of Bunbury, Bussleton and Margaret River in the SW of WA. As you can see the road curves around the suburb of Dudley Park to the right and Coodanup to the left to cross the Estuary on a large traffic bridge which has been built in recent years to help alleviate congestion in Mandurah. To the left of this road you can see the clearing (obvious by the sand and new canals) of Mariners Cove. This area used to be a large wetlands but unfortunately once permission was given to build the wetlands has been lost. Mariners Cove is home to many new canal homes and has shops and cafes by the river. Homes in this area are upwards of $400,000. To the right of the road and opposite this new development you can see the older canal homes by the river. Homes in this area are getting up to $500,000 and over.
You can clearly see the new traffic bridge crossing the river once at the opposite side of the river you enter the suburb known as Halls Head. There are areas to fish off on the bridge and areas adjacent to put a small boat in or go crabbing. There are plenty of amenities another large shopping centre is visible by its white roof to the right of the road. There are shops and cafes in the area. Halls Head is quite a narrow piece of land with estuary on one side and the lovely Indian Ocean on the other. There are primary schools and a High School in the area and also a private school (Living Waters). There is a golf course and country club to the right of the road. Suburbs with new land release areas close to Halls Head are Seascapes, Pelican Grove and the areas of Falcon and Erskine. Which are a little further down the road in the narrowest part of the land area. Along with Port Bouvard which overlooks both sea and estuary. Perched high above another bridge which crosses the estuary next to a man made canal allowing water from the estuary to flow out to sea this has made a big impact on the cleaning of the estuary which used to suffer from stagnation until the Dawesville cut was built. In all of these areas you are close to the beach and estuary and there are plenty of shopping centres, cafes and schools.
The road crosses the Dawseville Cut by a large bridge and you enter the suburbs of Dawesville estuary side and Florida Beach Oceanside. These suburbs are about 10-15 minutes drive south of the centre of Mandurah. There is a large choice of land releases and established homes in the area. Mandurah Road becomes the Bunbury Highway and takes the traveller south to the wine regions of the South West.
Mandurah is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia and is becoming a popular and vibrant city. There are plans to circumnavigate the city with an extension to the Kwinana Freeway which will eventually go as far as Bunbury. A new bus station has just being built which is just out of the picture behind the Centro Shopping Complex and the train line south of the city is expected to arrive by 2006-08 with a new station being built adjacent to the bus station.
Mandurah has a population in the region of 60,000 but that is expected to rise considerably within the next 5 years with a prediction of 100,000 by 2010. Mandurah City council seem to be doing a good job of encouraging tourism and industry to the area without loosing some of the charm of the place although it has changed considerably in the past 7 years since we arrived in the area. New schools are being built along with new roads and houses and as you can see it is a lovely place to live. Mandurah is situated in a region known as the Peel Region which is known for its tourism, agriculture and mining industry. It incorporates large land areas from the ocean to the hills.
It is difficult trying to describe an area from the picture but I am sure it gives you an idea of what it is like and if you plan to emigrate to Perth in Western Australia ... the beautiful city of Mandurah may be for you.
