When you are preparing to emigrate to Perth one of best ways of getting a real feel for the place is by accessing photographs. Here at Emi-Great we have done our best to put up some lovely photos on our site and now to add to that we have purchased aerial photographs of the area between Mandurah and Rockingham. Here is the first of those with a bit of information on the area you are viewing.
This particular photograph is taken looking North over the city of Rockingham and suburbs. You will notice the two main roads one to the right of the photograph which is Ennis Avenue this road runs from Mandurah through to Rockingham skirting the main housing areas but with good access to all areas of the city. The new railway to Mandurah is going to follow this road along the bushland to the right of the road. The second main road cuts through the city and is visible in the middle of the picture- this road is Warnbro Sound Avenue/Read Street. This road leads from Golden Bay through Secret Harbour (neither of which are visible on this photo but are to the South) right on through to Rockingham seafront. When the road "dog legs" to the left it becomes Read Street.
In the forefront of the picture is the suburb of Port Kennedy between the two roads is the estate of St Michel (two of our properties are situated in this pleasant new suburb). You can see the large grassed area with the long buildings (turquoise roof) this is the local new primary school- Rockingham Lakes Primary school. To the right of the school with darker roof is an old people's complex. You will notice there are lots of parks in the area all with lovely play areas for the kids.
To the left of Warnbro Sound Avenue/Read St is the area in Port Kennedy known at St Clair. This land being closer to the beach is slightly more expensive than the land in St Michael. Again there is a local primary school (Port Kennedy Primary) and two private schools St Bernadettes Primary and Living Waters - both primary and high school. Although it is not possible to see the whole of the costal area many of the homes are only seconds from the beach including our Venice property. Zaragoza and La Estrada are situated in the St Michael estate within easy drive of the lovely beaches.
If you look up past St Michael you will see adjacent to Warnbro Sound/Read St a fairly large complex of buildings to the right of the road (grey roof with a large playing field behind) this is a shopping complex -Warnbro Fair. Here there are a variety of shops and post office along with numerous take away food outlets. The playing fields behind this are the school fields for the local Warnbro primary school. The area around the primary is Warnbro (new area).
To the left of the road is also Warnbro (Old Warnbro) you can see the local High School-Warnbro High, Library and swimming pool all within the playing field area. Behind the state school is Living Waters. There is also Warnbro Primary school in the area.
Following the sweep of the coast line comes the suburb of Waikiki both sides of Read Street and then Safety Bay (so called because the bay is fairly safe all year round). Although you cant see the full sweep of the bay on this photo on the end of the point (which is just out of range) is the lovely Penguin Island.
You can see the lake in the middle of the finger of land and the clearing of land around the lake this is the new land release The Anchorage. This is also home to the suburb of Shoalwater. The lake is home to lots of fresh water long necked turtles and is to be preserved as a reserve. Following along the coast is the area called Palm Beach.
Coming back to the middle of the picture and looking at Read Street is the main city of Rockingham there are several small shopping complexes firstly (after Warnbro Fair) there is Waikiki Village (look for the tower on the picture to the right of the main road) then on the left of the road is Miami shops (servicing Safety Bay) then the main shopping centre in Rockingham which houses plenty of shops selling almost everything you wish to purchase, Centrelink offices, Banks and Medicare offices. This centre is adjacent to the main road (Read Street) and is by far the largest centre in the area.
Following Read Street down to the coast are the suburbs of Coolungup and Rockingham. There are primary schools and high schools in the area (some private and some public), most suburbs have at least one Primary School. You then come to the Rockingham seafront you can just see some of the higher buildings along the coast. The island at the top of the picture is Garden Island most of which is not accessible to the public since it is home to a good amount of the Australian Navy. If you look you can see the causeway joining the island to the mainland.
I hope that this picture helps to give you an overview of the area in general. For anyone looking at other suburbs Woodbridge is to the left of Ennis Avenue (just out of the picture where Ennis Avenue runs to the right. The local hospital is in this area. The land area cleared to the left of where the avenue runs off is Harrington Waters. About 5 minutes drive off Ennis Avenue to the left is the suburb of Baldivis incorporating River Gums and Settlers Hills. If you follow Ennis Avenue south you would come to Golden Bay(5 mins), Singleton (10 mins), Lakelands and Madora Bay (15mins) then Mandurah which is about 15 - 20 minutes from Rockingham. A regular bus service links both cities.
A rail link between Mandurah and Perth should be finished by 2008 and will have two stations in the Rockingham area so travel will be easy and affordable.
If you plan to migrate to Perth in Western Australia Rockingham is one of the lovely places you may choose to live.
